Rock climbing

The Saint Katherina area has some of the best rock climbing locations in the Middle East - towering granite mountains with sheer rock faces. We can provide guides to take you to the places, but you have to bring your own equipment, be an experienced climber and provide your own safety - we do not take any responsibility. We can set up base-camps in the more remote locations and provide everything you need; guide, camels to transport your gear, all food and a cook so when you return the meal is ready. We have a climbers' log-book in our office which was started by a Spanish group, one of the first European teams discovering this relatively little known area. The best information about rock climbing is available from www.israelalpine.org, with an "interactive schema of climbing areas page containing links to pictures of main climbing walls (with routes). Every route has its own index (i.e. E21), that can also be found in List of climbing routes. Some descriptions of routes can be located by clicking on a route from List or by clicking on index from schemas."

Ras Safsafa

The rock face of Ras Safsafa is located right above the village, with Mt. Sinai at the other end off the massif. There are several routes of different difficulty. We can provide transport to the base, a guide and camels if needed.

Jebel el Deir

Located above the Monastery of St. Katherine and Wadi Isbaiya on the other side, it is another impressive mountain. There are several routes of different difficulty. We can provide transport to the base, a guide and camels if needed.

Jebel Raba

Another good climb, Jebel Raba is towering right over the village. There are several routes of different difficulty. We can provide transport to the base, a guide and camels if needed.

Jebel Ansila

Located close to the village, this mountain can either be visited on a day-trip or we can set up a base camp at the foot in one of the gardens. There are several routes of different difficulty on the vertical face of Jebel Ansila and another few above Wadi Quweiz. We can provide a guide, camels, cook etc if needed.

Jebel Abu Mahashur

A challenging red granite dome with big, smooth surfaces. It is located in the high mountains and cannot be visited as a day program. We can set up a base camp at the foot in one of the gardens and provide everything you need. There are several routes of different difficulty.

Jebel Banat and Sida Nogra

A challenging red granite dome above a 40 meter tall, most days dry, seasonal water fall. It is located in the mountains and cannot be visited as a day program. We can set up a base camp at the foot in the open and provide everything you need. There are several routes of different difficulty.
